Adding an intake or cold air intake to your BMW 335i will be an excellent addition to an already perfect engine combination. You must be careful when choosing an air intake for this car, and make sure it will work seamlessly with the engine. The BMW 335i twin turbocharged engine has already been engineered to work well with the stock system, however, there are products out their that will make even the 3 series perfect system even better. An Air intake system or cold air intake is a performance product designed to cool down the air intake flow going into the vehicle and by doing this - to increase the power of the internal-combustion engine. Another part of having this aftermarket performance part is the change of the appeal of your vehicle Air intakes give the car a nice throaty growl when the gas is applied. Air intakes and cold air intakes come in a variety of models. Regular short ram intakes are made just to improve the air flow, the filter is mainly still in the same general area as where the stock one was. A cold air intake is about 1-2 feet longer and aims at getting the filter around the inside of the front bumper area. By doing this the filters position is away from engine heat thus making the air much cooler when entering the engine. The horsepower gains from either intake is about the same, the general argument is that a cold air intake will give more horsepower than the general short ram because the air entering the engine is colder. Either way the gains you can expect will be around the same. Here are some benefits of having an air intake system:
- Increased MPG or gas mileage
- Increased horsepower - anywhere from 7-25 horsepower (depending on setup/other parts etc.)
- Sounds great - Not loud, but enough to get noticed.
No matter which intake system you choose the results will be similar as far as performance and sound, just don't go cheap, or else you will find your self replacing it more than once, it pays to get a quality intake, they are engineered better and have proven performance records. Stay away from cheap parts especially for a BMW.
